This is a virtual self-exploring experiment of intrapersonal conversation based on a psychological and philosophical approach, providing a therapeutic and artistic experience. This project aims to challenge the dynamics of the essential cognitive activities involved with self-exploration and true self visualization. It transforms intangible daily data and process consisted of me into tangible 3D metaphor in VR space.

About

The ultimate goal of this experience is to find out the way of “persistancy of my identity”. My identity is still undergoing the process of alteration and maintenance. It means although I’m just one in number and it is numerically obvious, I’m still wondering whether it is possible to regard me as the same person. Following the deep consideration of who I am, it would be possible to investigate about myself comparing to another tense of me, both past and future.

Part 01.

The first sequence is data landscape.

It shows the whole spectrum of view including the constitution of my data collection.

The second sequence is geometric shapes of data.

It emulates the most basic data sources grounded in my identity.

Part 03.

The third sequence is metaphor of tranquility moments.

It shows my deepest inner identity without any interruptions or external surroundings.

Part 05.

The fifth sequence is about compliments and self-expression.

It represents how words and sentences can be harmonized as a melody and affect me.

Part 04.

The fourth sequence is about growth, achievement and self-compassion.

It embodies how I keep growing my independency and selffulness.

Inspiration

I want to approach to self-exploring experiment by answering 3 questions originated from Theseus Ship Paradox.

By collecting physical and non-physical objective data, I attempt to scrutinize the co-relationship of factors which make me same and change. Even though it would be hard to clearly define the answer of paradoxical questions, the attempt to explore myself and deeply concern about my identity would be a great opportunity to have regardfulness of my existance.

Research Background

The ship of Theseus is interpreted as a paradox created by the intertwining of the following general philosophical problems.

1. The question of sameness
”Can qualitatively different objects be numerically identical?”

2. Identity determination problem

“Is the identity of a physical thing determined solely by its physical parts? When a part changes, does the thing inevitably become something else? If not, what shapes the identity of the thing?”

3. The meaning of change
”It is closely related to the problem of material constitution in metaphysics. What does it mean to change?”

Also by collecting objective data, it would be much helpful to balance between Experience-self & Remeber-self, preventing from being too biased or unequally distributed by subjective perception which leads to overweigh on remember-self that makes a distortion of happiness.
